Minutes January 6, 2009

Once again, we are looking at the Newsletter and it’s distribution. We have spent a lot of time discussing what is right and what is wrong with the Newsletter and have decided to try publishing and distribution once per quarter. Our goal is to get all of the information sent via computer either using our blog site or setting up our website once again. For those who don’t have access to a computer we will hopefully have a distribution box with copies available or posted. We hope to make the switch and give everyone as much notice as possible.

One of the things that resulted from the Newsletter discussion was the need for a regular meeting place and time. A series of events has made the possibility of using the “Horn Preservation Station” for our meetings and sharing in some of the costs of maintenance and operation. Joaquin has volunteered a working heating unit and we have voted to pay for the installation. We think that the installation can be done for approximately $500 and should be accomplished in the next few months. A special thank you to the TACA organization for their cooperation.

Work is continuing on the Memorial Hospital project. The group is attempting to secure some industrial revenue bonds to aid in the project. We are still keeping track of the sidewalk project, but feel that it would be difficult if not impossible to obtain additional funding at this time. The plans to develop an urban garden for the neighborhood are underway and we could use lots of volunteer labor to start the project. If you would like to help get this project going, please contact one of the Board members.

Thanks to Kay Adams and Jerry Smith, it looks like we will be hosting the first Victorian Ball as one of our fundraising events. The dates have been set for Friday May 1st and Saturday May 2nd. There will be a professional team that provides the music and dance instruction. We hope to also provide a catered meal as an additional ticket option. The Greek Church will be providing the venue at a special price to the neighborhood. Several of our members have attended a similar event and all had a wonderfully fun experience. We hope to make this an annual event and can use lots of volunteers to make this a unique event for the City and Huning Highland.

We have had some inquiries about problems in the neighborhood. One is the noise coming from the speakers at the transportation center and we hope that in some way the speakers can be realigned to be less objectionable. There is the ongoing problem of the parking and interaction with the Evolution Group visitors near Silver and Broadway. We are looking at a long-term plan for a roundabout at Broadway and Central and whether it is still being considered. As always there are lots of things happening in our little corner of the world and we encourage you all to take an active part.
