Minutes from the March meeting were approved.

Newsletter—Because people need advance notice of the Mother’s Day tour in the Huning Highlands neighborhood, the board discussed timing of the newsletter and agreed on other articles to be written.

Updates

Tree project—Elaine summarized the grant and progress thus far for the benefit of several neighbors who came to the meeting. One change to the original plan is that neighbors will volunteer to plant and maintain the trees in front of their homes.

Easter Egg hunt—The annual event was a big success with 48 kids. Bonnie and Kathy went over to clean the park prior to the hunt only to find it spic and span, thanks to David Chamberlain whose daily attention to our park makes it a pleasant place to go. Lee, Blake, Steve Grant and kids hid eggs and kept order.

Highland Park—The $400K renovation is still in planning but work should start soon. The children’s area will be relocated east of its current location, and the parking lot will come out and be made part of the park.

Fire Station—Our written request to the City for a public/private arrangement for the future of the fire station was declined because for such an arrangement to be considered, we would have to be “in need.” The City decided we weren’t in need, thus we don’t qualify, meaning back to square one; i.e., a private entity will be the eventual buyer.

Rapid Ride—Our Central stop will be shifted to Central and Walter between Farina’s Pizza and Bhava Yoga. The City will add a cut-out and a shelter. The west stop remains the same and will also get a shelter.

Subway drive-thru—A decision has been postponed again by reason that the franchiser didn’t have a letter from ownership (in a trust).

Mother’s Day—Eight sites have been confirmed, a mix of homes, businesses, and gardens. Tickets will be on sale at Preservation Station. Octopus & Fox will have a sidewalk sale for the day.

Miscellaneous

The library at Albuquerque High is requesting to add “institutional use” to its zoning.

Phoenix announced that she will guide a second annual Huning Highlands historical home tour sponsored by UNM Continuing Education. Last year was a big success and had many participants.

Susan Vogel wants to know how to get speed bumps on Walter. “Slow down, Albuquerque” is not working on her block.

Allison is still worried about how dark it is on her section of Walter and doesn’t feel safe at night. Bonnie suggested we turn on porch lights until a permanent resolution can be determined.

The meeting adjourned at 7:35. Next meeting is Wed., May 1.
