Minutes from the June meeting were approved.

Guests: Salley, Audra, Sam, Alyssa, Joni, Aaron, Mark, David, Brigita

Presenter: David Day

Block party—Since the block party doubles as the annual meeting, the board planned a newsletter to be distributed the required 30 days before an annual meeting. The newsletter will include the slate of candidates and annual report. Zoey Fink, who is heading up the party, will write an article announcing it. Joni will ask Greg and David C. about distribution.

Tree project—The board voted its $500 contribution toward the tree project.

Subway—Moises attended an EDo meeting and reported that the Subway franchiser is on the verge of giving up the fight. Like Starbucks, they wanted a drive-thru. David Day said Maddox believed it best to work with them and extract conditions, such as limited access, parking, and landscaping. But now they’ve turned 180 degrees after learning that the city council won’t support the appeal, and that district court is presenting even more hurdles. The board will wait and see.

Trees—Most of the meeting was devoted to an update by David Day of the tree project. HH neighbors inventoried existing trees in a portion of the neighborhood. David, who has been the animator for Re-Tree Huning Highland, gave a presentation of plans and progress thus far. Tree NM will help with technical aspects. He said 70- 80-year-old trees on High and Walter are mapped for replacement. Planting plan will have its own character. The planting strip is city property but residents will be responsible for care and maintenance. He said we must convey the idea that we are organized and that planting is not just random. Scattered trees have no impact. Steve Grant wondered if lighting and sidewalks would be part of the outcome. David said trees had to be prioritized because trees are at the end of their lifespans all at the same time. Removal and maintenance need to be part of the plan.

Streets—The City has a draft “complete streets” manual that finalizes in mid-July. Moises referred to the 60-page document on the ABQ website. Rob Dickson has contacted him regarding Central Ave. as a speedway the way it’s configured, needing to be narrower with broader sidewalks, cafes, etc. There will be two more public hearings. Salley will put the link on the HH website.

Misc—Joni Neutra suggested having some kind of “welcome wagon” arrangement to meet and greet new people in the neighborhood.

Steve Grant suggested asking our representative Rick Miera to try for money in the coming legislative session for the tree project.

Counselor Isaac Benton and County Commissioner Art de la Cruz are planning a neighborhood ribbon-cutting for the new trees to happen sometime before the election on Oct 7.

Meeting adjourned at 7:30. Next meeting is Wed., Sept. 4, 2013.
