The following are the major activities of the Huning Highlands Board since August 2018:

Ongoing input was given to the government regarding various development projects in the neighborhood: apartment complexes at Arno and Gold and at Central and Edith; zoning variances for 214 Arno NE where an old soft drink bottling business was located; home renovation at various addresses in the neigh- borhood; Innovate ABQ; and the new IDO zoning.

At monthly meetings, discussions related to the neighborhood included crime reports from APD, drug and vagrancy issues at Highland Park & the Imperial Motel, sale of the old fire station to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, continuing traffic issues on Lead and Coal (including decision

Meeting Minutes, July 3, 2019

Traffic Lights/Bike Safety on Lead/Coal—There is currently $70,000 allocated for signals. Engineering should start in the next 4 weeks. There will also be a study on the bike lanes.

205 Edith NE—Bonnie reviewed the issue with this location: a business operating at this address - which is zoned residential. The owners do not live at this location. The owner of the property was not at the meeting to address this issue. 

Distribution of the notice of the Block Party/Annual Election—The annual election/block party is on August 11, 2019, from 5:00pm-8:00pm. We are required to distribute a flyer 4 weeks prior to this event.  David Tanner offered to distribute flyers.

Renovation of the old Baptist Church – John Freisinger, Director of Innovate ABQ  

  • Rainforest dorm completed. Now 86% occupancy for students involved in entrepreneurship. 
  • Makerspace in old gym for old Baptist Church completed.
  • Future plans for buildings: Church was decommissioned in 2007. There are 3 buildings: the sanctuary on corner, a 5 story office building - north of church. This will be converted to new office space and the old education wing west of the church which will converted to bioscience lab space.  
  • Plans are to demolish the walkway that connects the historic church building with the new building and improve the aesthetics of the building.
  • Future plans are to have stacked parking rather than surface parking.

Remodel of 206/208 Broadway – David Mahlman, Thirsty Eye Brewery. The gallery has 50 artists that show. Work has been completed on a Microbrewery and Tap Room and Coffee House (hours will be 7:30am-10pm) that will open Friday, June 14, 2019, 5pm-10pm for 2nd Friday Art Walk

Meeting Minutes, May 1, 2019

EASTER EGG HUNT—Barbara Maddox had volunteered to head up the Easter Egg Hunt this year but ran into scheduling difficulties so the Hunt didn’t happen this year.

NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN UP—Lisa Aurora-Calderon had volunteered to head up the Neighborhood Clean Up but also ran into scheduling difficulties so our neighborhood did not participate this year.

MOTHERS DAY TOUR—Salley said that ticket sales for the Mother’s Day Tour were going very well.  Purchase of the tickets prior to the event would be $12.00 and $15.00 on the day of the Tour.  Ann said that she was in good shape relative to the volunteers needed.  Tickets

FIRE STATION UPDATE—The Greek Church representative advised that the City of Albuquerque’s latest appraisal of the Fire Station ($480,000) was based on the property remaining a Fire Station and will have a new appraisal done.  This process will take approximately 6 to 8 weeks.  A Letter of Support for this project will be deferred until the appraisal information is presented at a future meeting.
