Huning Highland Historic District Association Meeting

6:30pm | Preservation Station

OFFICERS’ REPORT:

APD community rep Lara Trujillo and Officer R. Peyton gave the monthly crime report: 1 residential burglary, 1 commercial burglary, 7 vehicle thefts. Trujillo conducted an informal survey of members’ awareness of the PD in various media. In the matter of a particular address on Broadway which has been of concern to our membership the police, for the third successive month, took note of our concerns and promised to respond in the future. Our disappointment was vocalized.

EDITH AVE SAFETY UPGRADE:

Residents of Edith between Central and Martin Luther King gave us an update on their efforts to get some traffic calming strategies installed in their neighborhood. They asked HHHDA to add a letter of endorsement to a petition and a letter to be sent to our city councilor asking for action on the matter. Elwood made a motion to write and send such a letter, Trefethen seconded and the motion was approved.

119 HIGH SE UPDATE:

Homewise, a not-for-profit organization that obtains affordable housing for qualified citizens, recently purchased the blighted property on 119 High Street SE.  Elena Gonzales, Sr. Director of Communications for Homewise, was present to update us on their progress with the High Street renovation. A survey of the property is in process and a design proposal is expected in December or January. The draft design will be presented to HHHDA at that time. Meanwhile she reported on their efforts to secure the property and took note of neighbors’ concerns on that matter.

MOSQUITOES:

Nick Pederson, Environmental Health Manager with the city, was invited to give a report on the recent surge of mosquitoes in the area. Many of our members have remarked on the unprecedented numbers of pests this year. Pederson reports that the entire city is experiencing this plague of Aedes Aegyptus mosquitoes and that it is not surprising to entomologists.  The mosquitoes were first detected in Las Cruces four years ago and it was predicted then that they would become established in Albuquerque within a few years. They are here to stay and we, as residents, will have to get in the habit of looking for the standing water the mosquitoes need to thrive. Unlike other breeds of mosquito, humans are the preferred food source of the Aegyptus mosquito.

NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME:

A request for a member or members to attend city council meetings and vocalize our concerns about crime within our district. We recognize that we will just be one of many voices saying the same thing but it is important that we keep reminding officials that we are paying attention and wanting action. Fiona Cook volunteered to take on this task and we are grateful to her for that.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:28 p.m.

Next meeting will take place Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at 6:30pm.
