April Meeting Minutes
Huning Highland Historic District Association Meeting
6:30pm | Preservation Station
Here is a summary of the HHHDA meeting on April 5.
OFFICER REPORT
The officer reported on monthly crime in the area and stayed to respond to issues regarding frequent fires being set in the neighborhood.
CENTRAL UNDERPASS
Jen read a letter created by a multi-neighborhood group advocating for an at-grade crossing at Central to replace the Underpass. The Board approved sending the letter to the Mayor and Jen distributed the letter for signatures from others in attendance who supported this effort.
RESTRIPING
Bonnie reported that the City will clean up the partially removed markings at Edith as soon as ground temperatures rise where this work can be completed.
In addition, the City has admitted that they do not have our neighborhood slated for restriping due to other higher priority projects.
STREET LIGHTS
Salley reported that the City is planning to place shields on the current street lights to see if that will reduce brightness. If that doesn’t work, the City agrees to replace the street light heads.
STOPLIGHT TIMING
Lee reported that City workers told him the timing devices that will sense the speed of oncoming traffic on Lead and Coal (ahead of the stoplights) have not yet been installed. That explains why some traffic is seen to be speeding through the stoplights. Once installed, the sensors will turn the lights to red if speeding traffic is approaching. (Update: the sensors/software is now installed so traffic lights will turn to red if approaching traffic is speeding.)
RECENT FIRES
There was a lengthy discussion regarding fires that have been set in our neighborhood. Neighbors reported incidents where they witnessed Desiree starting fires and where 911 was called. No arrests were made. The Community Action Service van staff reported that she does not want service and they can do nothing. The officer present at our meeting suggested that we get no trespassing signs including the City ordinance against trespassing and post these signs in our alleys. Then when there is another incident, we should call 911 and ask to speak to an officer saying we want to file a “criminal trespass” violation. Neighbors who have dealt with Desiree say she is carrying a knife and to be careful in confronting her. Jen volunteered to get 40 no trespassing signs and add the City ordinance citation for neighbors to pick up at the next meeting.
CANNABIS CAFÉ
A neighbor asked about rumors that a Coffee and Cannabis Café would be opening on Central across from old Albuquerque High. Moises said that he didn’t think onsite consumption was part of current zoning, but he would check into it. (Update from Moises: There is no prohibition against onsite consumption, but the proposed café would have to apply for a permit. As part of that process there would be a public hearing to which both EDo and HHHDA would be invited.)
The next meeting will be May 3.
